• The chemical formula of water is H2O, it is made up of oxygen and hydrogen
• For existence of life on earth water is very essential
• Each molecule of water is a blend of 2 hydrogen and 1 oxygen atom
• Water is present in liquid, gas and solid state
• Water is usually referred to as in liquid state, the ice is the form of solid state and steam and water vapor is in gas state
• Around 70% of the earth’s surface is covered by water
• The Pacific ocean, the Atlantic ocean and the Indian ocean are the 3 largest oceans on the earth
• The Marina Trench found in the Pacific ocean is the deepest known point in the world’s ocean
• The rotation of the earth and the gravitational pull of moon and sun acting on ocean water cause ocean tides
• Every Kg (2.2lb) of seawater contains (1.2oz) 35 grams of dissolved salt, water from a ocean or sea is called seawater.
• As the amount of salt dissolved in water increases the freezing point of water reduces. Sea water freezes at 2 °C (28.4 °F) with the average level of salt in it.
• Nile River is the longest river in the world, it reaches 6650 kms in length ( 4132 miles)
• Amazon River is the 2nd largest river in the world, reaching 6400 kms in length (4000 miles)
• Water is a good solvent, with sugar, acids and salt easily dissolving in it. However oil and fats don’t mix well in water
• Missouri River is the longest river in the USA, it is slightly longer than Mississippi River (2,320 miles), at around 3,770 km (2,340 miles) in length. The 2 rivers combined together form the longest river system in North America
• The water cycle includes water evaporation, cooling, rising to sky and condensing into tiny drops of ice crystals or water that we see as clouds, before evaporating again it falls back on earth as snow, rain or hail.
• Scientists suggested possibility of liquid/water on the red planet. Water at the polar ice caps of Mars planet is in the form of ice.
